The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

9 Apr 1979, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), on adoption of a convention by African Ministers of Information. Took over the activities of Union des agences d'informations africaines, which had been set up 6 Apr 1963, Tunis (Tunisia), on recommendation of U-XG0674 - Maghreb Arab Press Agency. Headquarters in Dakar (Senegal) installed Sep 1979. Officially inaugurated and commenced news agency activities, 25 May 1983. A specialized agency of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU). PANA Recovery Plan under the aegis of B-XB3383 - UNESCO adopted by OUA Heads of State and Government, 1 Jul 1992; implementation commenced 1 Feb 1993. Reconstituted, 1 Oct 1997, as a private international news and information service with the title PANAPRESS.

Aims

Objectives of restructuring: (1) in the capacity and position of premier source of reliable information on Africa, consolidate editorial independence so as to boost credibility and prepare for embarking on dynamic marketing of information products; (2) operate a satellite communication network (VSAT) in order to make editorial services more accessible to media in Africa and in other continents; (3) open up to 60% of share capital to private investors.

Structure

Current structure: Conference of Ministers of Information (every 2 years). Intergovernmental Council (meets annually), consisting of 14 Members: 2 for North, 4 for West, 3 each for Central and Eastern, and 2 for Southern Africa. Ad hoc technical committees. Regional Offices.
