History

4-10 Dec 1950, Nice (France), a preparatory university conference having been convened by UNESCO and the Dutch government, 1948, Utrecht (Netherlands). Statutes adopted 9 Dec 1950, Nice (France); amended: 24 Sep 1955, Istanbul (Turkey); 12 Sep 1960, Mexico City (Mexico); 20 Aug 1975, Moscow (USSR); 12 Aug 1985, Los Angeles CA (USA); 25 Aug 2000, Durban (South Africa); 28 July 2004, Sao Paulo (Brazil); 5 July 2008, Utrecht (Netherlands).

Aims

Promote: development of international cooperation in the field of higher education and research and intensification of exchanges among member institutions and organizations; offer a global forum, engage in debate, conduct research, disseminate information and coordinate advocacy and other actions on issues of shared interest and concern; seek to provide technical assistance and grants for inter-institutional collaboration and other services to members and others in the academic community worldwide; create information and communication instruments and provide documentation and reference material concerning higher education worldwide; build a strong international higher education community able to promote mutual understanding among different peoples and cultures and thus serve the cause of peace.

Activities

Organizes conferences, symposia, colloquia, seminars, round tables and workshops and provides services for member institutions and the international community of higher education - teachers, researchers, administrators, students, policy-makers and decision-makers.

'Studies and Research Programme': focuses on issues which are common to institutions and systems across the world or on comparative analyses of situations in which differences may be particularly helpful in understanding current developments in higher education. Areas of current interest and commitment include: equitable access and success in Higher Education; role of universities as actors for sustainable development; internationalization of higher education; doctoral programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa; higher education and Education for All (EFA) - role of universities in intercultural learning and dialogue; values and ethics in higher education; governance and management - grant programme; ethics in higher education. 'Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER) Programme': supports professional development activities of higher education leaders.
