History
13 May 1992, Montevideo (Uruguay), when 12 governments of Latin America and North America signed the Agreement Establishing the Institute. The Agreement entered into force 11 Mar 1994 with the formal ratification of the Agreement by 6 countries.
Aims
Promote regional cooperation for interdisciplinary research on aspects of global change related to the sciences of earth, ocean, atmosphere and environment and to social sciences, with particular attention to impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity, to socio-economic impacts and technologies and economic aspects associated with the mitigation of and adaptation to global change; improve public awareness and provide scientific information to governments for the development of public policy relevant to global change.
