History

9 May 1952, Tokyo (Japan), on signature of T-XT5209 - International Convention for the High Seas Fisheries of the North Pacific Ocean by Canada, Japan and USA; entered into force 12 Jun 1953, on exchange of ratifications; amended by Protocol signed by Canada, Japan and USA, 25 Apr 1978, Tokyo, which entered into force 15 Feb 1979. Annex amended as of 23 May 1986. Ceased activities, 20 Feb 1993, when replaced by D-XD2788 - North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC).

Aims

Provide for scientific studies and for coordinating the collection, exchange and analysis of scientific data regarding anadromous species and provide a forum for cooperation among the Contracting Parties with respect to non-anadromous species; encourage conservation of fisheries resources of the North Pacific Ocean and maximum sustained productivity of such resources.

Structure

Commission, composed of Commissioners from each Contracting Party. Officers: Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary elected annually, each country in turn being represented in each office. Secretariat, headed by Executive Director. Standing Committees: Biology and Research; Finance and Administration, supplemented by ad hoc committees to deal with special problems. Meetings closed, but observers may be invited. Secretariat.
