History

17 Oct 1983, Rome (Lesotho), at inaugural congress, as a research offshoot of U-XF2176 - Southern African Universities Social Science Conference (SAUSSC), following recommendations of First International Workshop on Research Priorities in Southern Africa, Nov 1981, Rome (Lesotho), of H-XD9682 - Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) - currently F-XF2522 - Southern African Development Community (SADC) - and efforts of the workshop's Regional Continuation Committee serviced by U-XG2699 - Institute of Southern African Studies (ISAS).

Aims

Promote exchange of development-oriented research, information and documentation in Southern Africa; promote and coordinate research projects among research institutes and researchers in the region; channel proposals from the regions to SADCC and to international funding agencies; promote national research in the region, ensuring integration of national and regional socio-economic development process research into teaching and training programmes; facilitate scientific training and exchange of students and staff.
