History

1 Oct 1997, London (UK), by merger of the Society of Public Health (SPH), set up in 1856, as 'Metropolitan Association of Medical Officers of Health' which subsequently, 1873, became 'Society of Medical Officers of Health' and, 1973, 'Society of Community Medicine', the last title of 'Society of Public health' having been adopted in 1989, and of Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene (RIPHH), formed in 1886, as 'Society of Medical Men Qualified in Sanitary Science', incorporated, 1982, as 'British Institute of Public Health', renamed, 1897, Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH), and merged with Institute of Hygiene (IoH) in 1937. Subsequently changed name to Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene and Society of Public Health (RIPHH and SPH). 1 Jan 2002 name changed to Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH). Present name adopted upon merger with the 'Royal Society of Health'. Incorporated by Royal Charter. UK Registered Charity: 1125949.
