History

Founded 1992, as Enterprise for the Americas Initiative (EAI) -- Initiative pour les Amériques, following proposal, Jun 1990, Buenos Aires (Argentina), by Act of US Congress, under US President George H W Bush. Expanded by Act of US Congress, 1998, under US President William Clinton. Registered in accordance with US law included in the US Foreign Assistance Act as Part IV. In 1998, a Part V was added and called the Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA), which built on the EAI and made two major changes - it focused the purpose on tropical forest conservation and it made the programme worldwide.

Aims

Reduce official debt to the USA by qualifying countries while providing the means to create and endow public-private foundation to grant small sums to NGOs and communities in the field of tropical forest conservation.
