History

7 Dec 1977, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), as the specialized agency of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU) in the field of telecommunications, a result of regional cooperation connected with development of H-XF5912 - Pan African Telecommunications Network (PANAFTEL). A decision, Jul 1986, of OAU Assembly of Heads of State resolved on a future merger of PATU with D-XD4305 - Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) to form single post and telecommunications organization; however, on decision of conference, 1990, Monrovia (Liberia), the organizations remained separate. Subsequently ceased to exist, 7 Dec 1999, at 4th Extraordinary Session of the Conference of Plenipotentiaries, when replaced by D-XD6386 - African Telecommunications Union (ATU).

Aims

Harmonize and coordinate development of telecommunications networks and services in Africa in a concerted and integrated manner.
