Founded

2002

History

Set up 2002, by H-XD0665 - European Community, following a proposal Dec 1997, Echternach (Luxembourg). Previously also referred to as European Spatial Planning Observatory Network and subsequently as European Spatial Planning Observation Network. Current title adopted 7 Nov 2007, when ESPON 2013 Programme was adopted by E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC). As part of a renewal and upgrade of ESPON for the period 2014-2020 and beyond, an European Grouping on Territorial Cooperation - EGTC has been established according to European law to act as Single Beneficiary and deliver the content envisaged by the ESPON 2020 Cooperation Programme. Since then, also referred to as ESON EGTC.

Aims

Promote and foster a European territorial dimension in development and cooperation by providing evidence, knowledge transfer and policy learning to public authorities and other policy actors at all levels.
