History

Dec 1948, Munich (Germany FR). Since 1953 an associated project of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Became a foundation in 1996.

Aims

Systematically collect literature for children and youth of all countries and languages and reference literature so as to make it available to children's book specialists and the general public; promote international understanding by means of youth literature.

Activities

Includes: reference library for experts; lending library for children and youth; special collections of historical children's literature. Holdings: about 570,000 volume primary and 30,000 volume secondary literature and over 140 titles of periodicals. Organizes: international seminars; programmes for children and youth; literature promotion; in-house and travelling exhibitions on books and illustrations; roundtables on international literature for children; bursaries for foreign researchers (short-term).
