Why Edmonton?

By Nicola Alexander, Business Development Account Manager, Explore Edmonton (based in the UK)
Did you know that…?

Edmonton has the fastest growing AI and tech ecosystem in North America and is the world's most northern metropolis. Edmonton’s River Valley is the largest urban parkland in North America – 22 times the size of New York’s Central Park!

Help for associations?

We focus on aligning conferences with Edmonton’s key industry sectors including energy and sustainability, tech and innovation, health and life sciences and food and agriculture, providing associations with access to thought leaders and global experts, research, and innovation to support their conference. We support associations in organizing sustainable conferences and, depending on the social and economic impact of the conference, we sometimes offer funding support.

Where to meet?

Explore Edmonton is quite unique in the fact that not only are we a destination marketing and management organisation (DMMO), but we also manage and operate the city’s two largest convention centres. The Edmonton Convention Centre has 145,000 square feet of space and is located on our spectacular River Valley and the Edmonton EXPO Centre, to the north of the downtown area, is the largest venue of its kind in Western Canada with 522,000 square feet of flexible conference and exhibition space. This all means we lead with a one-team approach when it comes to hosting large events in our city.

Where to stay?

This all means we lead with a one-team approach when it comes to hosting large events in our city.
Many of the major hotel chains are here including the iconic Fairmont Hotel Macdonald and a flagship JW Marriott in Edmonton’s Ice District, a hub for restaurants, nightlife and entertainment.

How to reach Edmonton?

With an international hub airport just 35 minutes from downtown, Edmonton is among Canada’s other globally connected hubs including Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. Edmonton International Airport offers nonstop flights from more than 50 major cities in Canada, the United States and international destinations including Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

Somewhere special: personal recommendations/insider tips?

I love exploring the River Valley and its network of biking and walking trails, especially in the summer months when Edmonton experiences 18 hours of daylight. The food and restaurant scene is so impressive, you’ll find some of Canada’s award winning restaurants in Edmonton, and new restaurants are opening all the time. A must when visiting Edmonton is the Indigenous Peoples Experience at Fort Edmonton Park. It opened just a few years back and explores life through the diversity of First Nations' and Métis peoples' histories, experiences, and perspectives, giving visitors a deeper understanding and connection to Edmonton.
