The United Nations is convening a four-day summit of Economists, Educationists,civil society organizations, Administrators, Manufacturers, Researchers, Non-Governmental Organizations, Religious Leaders, Oil and Gas Trade companies all over the world, Community Organizations Private Sector from 21 - 24 May, 2012 in London (UK) to assess the worst Oil and Gas Trade down turn since the Great Depression. The aim is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of oil crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all countries of the world. The UNCTAD summit coming up in May was mandated at the Follow-up World International Conference on Energy Solution for All Promoting Cooperation, Innovation and Investment in Oil and Gas Sector, held in May 2005 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Member States requested the General Assembly to organize the meeting “at the highest level ” in London, United Kingdom.
In the field of energy, UNCTAD has given high priority to biofuels since 2005, and particularly as a trade and investment opportunity for developed and developing countries. Under the Kyoto Protocol and in the field of alternative energy technologies and climate change, UNCTAD has supported efforts to engage the private sector in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as part of a programme giving emphasis to the work in LDCs.
