Founded

1966

History

1966, as European Space Research Institute -- Institute européen de recherches spatiales, in the framework of European Space Research Organization (ESRO) -- Organisation européenne de recherches spatiales whose Convention entered into force on 20 Mar 1964 and was terminated by the Convention of D-XD0868 - European Space Agency (ESA), to carry out research activities on interplanetary plasma physics. First permanent building for experiments completed and occupied in Feb 1969. In 1973, became ESA centre for management of scientific and technical information databases, providing access to 200 research and technology databases worldwide. Following internal reorganization, 1992, now focuses on data handling in the field of earth observation, previously the work of U-XF1946 - Earthnet Programme Office (EPO), set up in 1978, within the framework of ESRIN. Since 1997, also responsible for ESA's non-operational data handling activities as well as for the maintenance of the ESA Web site. Since 1999, headquarters of the 'Vega Small Launcher Programme Department'.

Aims

Provide the ground segment required for acquisition, preprocessing, archiving and distribution of satellite remote sensing data; develop Earth observation data user applications and novel algorithms; develop informatics applications and operate the resulting services and infrastructures for all ESA's establishments; implement the Vega Small Launcher Programme.
