Founded

1985

History

1985, with centres in Geneva (Switzerland) and Nairobi (Kenya), as a function-specific element within the framework of E-XE4161 - UNEP, incorporated into a Programme Activity Centre by decision 16/25 of 16th Session of Governing Council. Originally one of 6 main components of the now United Nations system-wide H-XF5535 - Earthwatch; currently related to Earthwatch through UNEP's Programme, managed by UNEP Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA). GRID Arendal established 1989; GRID Sioux Falls and GRID Warsaw in 1991.

Aims

Underpin UNEP's environmental early warning activities, big data processing and its efforts to support global and regional environmental decision-making by improving access to high-quality data about the state of the world's environment.

Structure

A global network of governmental, non-governmental and academic centres of excellence in remotely sensed data gathering which also have geo-spatial capability to manage this data. Formerly coordinated through a Programme Activity Centre based at UNEP Headquarters; since 1995, centres tend to operate independently. Offices located in: Arendal (Norway); Geneva (Switzerland); Nairobi (Kenya); Sioux Falls SD (USA); Warsaw (Poland). Previously also in: Brazil; Budapest (Hungary); Christchurch (New Zealand); Moscow (Russia); Tbilisi (Georgia); Tsukuba (Japan).
