Presenting the full range of international non-profit organizations described in the Yearbook of International Associations has long been a difficulty in a book format severely constrained by space. The CD-ROM, using the widespread and user-friendly C-Content TM retrieval software, solves this problem with elegance and ease, offering quick and easy access to all the data on international organizations included in the printed edition of the Yearbook, in a compact format. Hyperlinks

A unique feature of the CD-Rom version of the Yearbook is the ability to allow users to explore via hyperlinks several hundred thousand relationships between organizations. This provides users with the possibility of exploring the complex network of relationships between organizations through a multitude of links in addition to specific references to individual countries. These hyperlinks allow the user to "jump" from one organization to another in the network just like on the Internet. The organization descriptions also offer hyperlinks to biographical descriptions of organizations' key officers.

For instance, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations is linked to 546 bodies. UNESCO is linked to some 1,030 international bodies. The complex of 186 bodies making up the European Union institutions is very difficult to explore without hypertext assistance; this new CD- ROM has some 1,600 links between such bodies, and a further 1,837 to nongovernmental bodies.

Multilingual features

The Yearbook profiles are in English, with other language-titles. However, the CD-ROM's 100,000 term multilingual thesaurus enables users to access English descriptions using subject terms from other languages, whether or not descriptors appear in that language in the organization description. For example, German users can use German words to access information only available in English. Desciptions of the CD-ROM from 1997 are also available in French.
