History

Founded by signatories to first Statutes, both private individuals and representatives of national and international bodies concerned with sport and physical education. First Statutes amended and adopted by the first General Assembly, 12 Sep 1960, Rome (Italy). Statutes subsequently modified by General Assemblies: Oct 1963, Paris; Oct 1964, Tokyo (Japan); Oct 1968, Mexico City (Mexico); Jan 1971, Paris; Aug 1972, Munich (Germany FR); Jul 1976, Québec (Canada); Jul 1982, Helsinki (Finland); Sep 1988, Cheonan (Korea Rep). Current Statutes, adopted by 18th General Assembly, 18 Nov 1998, Barcelona (Spain), came into effect 1 Feb 1999; revised at 20th General Assembly, Jul 2002, Manchester (UK), at 21st General Assembly, Aug 2004, Thessaloniki (Greece), at 22nd General Assembly, Aug 2006, Berlin (Germany), at 23rd General Assembly, Jul 2008, Guangzhou (China), at 24th General Assembly, Jul 2010, Havana (Cuba), at 25th General Assembly, Jul 2012, Glasgow (UK), at 26th General Assembly, Jun 2014, Helsinki (Finland), at 27th General Assembly, April 2016, Santos (Brazil), at 28th General Assembly, April 2017, Frankfurt (Germany), at 29th General Assembly, September 2018, Johannesburg (South Africa), and at 30th General Assembly (online),12 May 2021.

Aims

Contribute to a strong sporting sector, high quality physical education and improved health worldwide; maintain an inclusive perspective on the different disciplines of sport, sport science and physical education and of furthering a continuing collaboration between them.
