1979-12-19

History

19 Dec 1979, by Secretary-General of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN), in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 34/218, Section III, as an organizationally distinct entity within the UN Secretariat. Mandate was to provide the necessary support for implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action on Science and Technology for Development, adopted 31 Aug 1979, at UN Conference on Science and Technology for Development. Took over most of the posts and budgetary resources of the Office for Science and Technology of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, abolished 2 Feb 1980. Also referred to by acronym CSTD. Ceased to exist, Jul 1993, when activities were integrated into the work programme of E-XE3381 - UNCTAD.

Aims

Support implementation of the Vienna (Austria) Programme of Action; be responsible for stimulating and catalyzing the formulation and implementation of policies and plans for harnessing science and technology for development.

Structure

Within the organizational framework of the United Nations, the Centre supports the Director-General for Development and International Economic Co-operation in his efforts to harmonize the activities of the United Nations in science and technology for development. The function of the Centre was to serve as the substantive secretariat for: (a) U-XE8866 - United Nations Intergovernmental Committee on Science and Technology for Development (IGCSTD); (b) U-XE0709 - Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development (ACSTD); (c) 'Task Force on Science and Technology for Development of the Administrative Committee on Co-ordination'. Professional staff: Executive Director, 2 Management Team/Directors, Special Assistant and members of 4 Clusters.
