History
1975, following recommendations of 1st Conference on African Museums, 1972, Livingstone (Zambia), when Livingstone Secretariat was set up to develop the organization in coordination with the Provisional Board of African Museums Association, set up 1969, Algiers (Algeria), at 1st Pan African Festival, and by which title the organization is sometimes referred. 1st General Assembly held Jan 1978. Known also under the acronym OMSA.
Aims
Promote the interests of organizations responsible for museums, monuments and sites; foster the collection, discovery, study, preservation and presentation of natural and cultural heritage of Africa; encourage close cooperation with international cultural organizations; prevent illicit trade in African cultural treasures.
