The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

1977-12-19

History

19 Dec 1977, under resolution 32/172 (paragraph 10) of General Assembly of the A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). Also referred to in French as Groupe de travail interorganisations sur la désertification. Currently under reorganization pending restructuring of the institutional set-up in the context of T-XT9461 - United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Aims

As an intergovernmental negotiating committee for the elaboration of an international convention in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa: coordinate activities of UN specialized agencies and other UN organizations with respect to implementation of the United Nations Plan of Action to Combat Desertification (PACD); promote closer cooperation among them on specific anti-desertification projects.

Structure

Comprises a network of agencies with experience in U-XU2205 - Plan of Action to Combat Desertification (PACD), having actively supported U-XK0503 - Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the Elaboration of an International Convention to Combat Desertification (INCD). Secretariat provided by the Drylands Ecosystems and Desertification Control Programme Activity Centre (DEDC/PAC) of E-XE4161 - UNEP.
