History
1977, by E-XE3060 - Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to implement Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation in the Americas Program, at the request of governments of the Latin America and Caribbean region. Program previously also referred to as Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Coordination Program – Programme de coordination des secours en cas d'urgence – Programa de Preparativos para Situaciones de Emergencia y Coordinación del Socorro en Casos de Desastre. Subsequently titled: Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Coordination Office (PED) – Bureau de coordination des secours en cas d'urgence – Oficina de Preparativos para Situaciones de Emergencia y Coordinación del Socorro en Casos de Desastre.
Aims
Reduce mortality, morbidity and societal disruption resulting from emergencies and disasters through detection, management and mitigation of high-threat pathogens, and all-hazards risk reduction, preparedness, response and early recovery activities that build resilience and use a multi-sectoral approach to contribute to health security.
