History

25 May 1957, under the provisions of the T-XT5765 - Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), modified by the Council Regulation (EEC) 2084/93 of 20 Jul 1993, in force 1994. New regulations in force 1 Jan 2014 until end 2020. Comes under Directorate-General Employment and Social Affairs of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), and now also of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU), being the main tool by which the European Union translates employment policy aims into action.

Aims

As part of European Union policy of economic and social cohesion and European social policy: support European employment policy and national action plans for employment linked to it; promote high employment equality between men and women, sustainable development and economic and social cohesion by supporting measures to prevent and combat unemployment and to develop human resources and social integration into the labour market, and in particular, contribute to actions undertaken in pursuance of 'European Employment Strategy' and 'Annual Guidelines on Employment'.
