History

Founded as the policy-making organization for the management of fisheries in the USA exclusive economic zone (EEZ, generally 3 to 200 miles offshore) around the territories of American Samoa and Guam, the State of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Is and the US Pacific island possessions, an area of nearly 1.5 million square miles. One of 8 fishery management councils in the USA established under the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976.

Aims

Protect fishery resources while maintaining opportunities for domestic commercial and recreational fishing at sustainable levels of effort and yield.
