Founded

1975

History

1975, following a series of meetings between independent tanker owners, bankers, shipbuilders and oil companies who were concerned about the widespread effect of surplus tanker capacity. Reorganized 1979. Ceased to exist 2018.

Aims

Re-establish and subsequently maintain a healthy commercial and financial climate for all sectors of maritime industry; further a coherent international policy of increased scrapping of surplus tonnage and orderly reduction of over-capacity in shipbuilding, together with a commercially sound approach to new building and ship financing in the future; promote improvement, strengthening and widening of port state control as a means of eliminating substandard ships.

Forum has no formal constitution: day-to-day affairs organized by Steering Committee (comprising very senior representatives of 9 banks, 2 oil companies, 6 shipowners, 4 shipbuilders and 3 insurance companies), Ship Finance Committee, Membership Committee and Secretariat.
