Founded

1993-03-25

History

Founded as a dicastery of the Roman Curia, uniting the previous Pontifical Council of the same name, set up 20 May 1982, with H-XF1075 - Pontificium Concilium pro Dialogo cum Non Credentibus (PCDNC), created 9 Apr 1965, by Pope Paul VI, as 'Secretariatus pro Non Credentibus'. Part of the F-XF8042 - Administrative Hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

Aims

Witness to the Church's pastoral concern concerning the gap between faith and cultures; study unbelief and religious indifference, inquiring into the causes and consequences in different cultures; support the Church's evangelization of cultures and inculturation of the Gospel; promote initiatives of dialogue between faith and culture, as well as a dialogue with those who do not believe in God, whenever these show themselves open to sincere cooperation.

Plenary Session (always in Vatican City). Sections (2): 'Faith and Culture' which pursues activities previously carried out by the 1982 Pontifical Council for Culture; 'Dialogue with Cultures' which pursues the activities previously carried out by the Pontifical Council for Dialogue with Non-Believers. Presided over by a Cardinal or Archbishop, assisted by Secretary and Under-Secretary. Members and Consultors in various countries, nominated by the Pope.
