History

Established 9 Mar 1994, on adoption by European Parliament (EP) of 'Statute of the European Ombudsman' covering regulations and general conditions governing performance of the Ombudsman's duties. Set up under the terms of Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty) and within the framework of European Union (EU). First European Ombudsman was elected by the European Parliament on 12 July 1995. Previously known in English as Office of the European Ombudsman.

Aims

As an independent body working to produce impartial decisions: resolve complaints relating to specific instances of maladministration within European Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies; provide effective means of redress for citizens denied legal rights or not receiving proper administrative treatment by these bodies; help secure the position of citizens by promoting good administrative practices; help relieve the burden of litigation by promoting friendly settlements and by making recommendations that avoid the need for court proceedings; promote the rights of citizens at all levels of governance in the European Union; promote transparency in the work of EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies.
