Activities

European Commission identifies protected sites in collaboration with member states. Each member state may choose the mechanisms used to implement relevant conservation measures on its territory. These measures may take 2 forms: appropriate statutory, administrative or contractual measures; appropriate management plans. Contractual measures may involve a relationship between competent authorities and individual landowners and are limited to individual land-holdings which are normally smaller than the site. 'Natura 2000 Networking Programme', set up in 2004, promotes good practice in the management of Natura 2000 sites.
