In the summer of 2004, the UIA partnered with the Europhil Trust to edit, publish and host its Civil Society Glossary. This is the most recent version which appeared online in 2006.

The Civil Society Glossary is a resource of terms and definitions used when working in and with the civil society sector.

Term Definition
Net/Nett
Free from, or not subject to, any deduction, usually refers to income after deduction of tax.
Non-Governmental Organisation (N.G.O.)

A private international organisation (as distinguished from an international intergovernmental organisation), set up either in the form of a single association or as a federation of various national organisations. (The International Union of Associations in Brussels publishes a Yearbook of International Organisations).

The most important N.G.O.s are given consultative status with the United Nations or its specialised agencies and with regional organisations.

Non-Profit
(Adjective) That which does not plan to make a profit. It is one of the criteria used for distinguishing a charity from a commercial undertaking, and for determining whether an organisation qualifies for tax privileges.
